It's not sufficient to trouble shoot with above information. Can you post the code of the Master page, content page, and UserControl here?
A stripped sample that doesn't rely on a specific database and class is preferred.

Stupid indeed (took me quite some time to figure out). It occurs when you mix up servicepath and scriptpath attributes in the aspx
