The ASP.NET TreeView control is not supported in update panels. I have heard of some people getting certain actions to work by doing them in the prerender event, but I would suggest looking at a 3rd party control. We use the telerik controls, and we have been pretty happy with them. They aren't free though, and I'm not sure if they could do what you are trying to do.
